Newark Gets Charged for Drainage Repairs

This past summer has been quite the rainy one and with all these storms a lot of flooding occurred in Newark, NJ. After investigating the city’s sewer system, it was determined that it would costs millions in replacement and repair. City officials want to charge residents a monthly fee to help pay the bill.

According to engineers at Pennoni Associates Inc. the damage isn’t just in the drainage system but also in the pipes crossing through the sewers; there is debris, fallen mortar and more. Lack of maintenance through the years is another cause. The amount of damage would cost the town $7 million dollars for both short term and long term problems.

The council proposed the options of a $7.50 monthly fee for residents and a $30 monthly fee for commercial properties or a 27.8% increase in taxes. However, neither of these options are officially happening, yet. The meeting was meant to be informative to all members rather then to get the money from people. What do you think the verdict will be for Newark? Read more about the town issues online.
